Catalytic converters contain precious metals that are formed into honeycomb bricks with many small passages. As auto exhaust is forced through the catalytic converter, the precious metals inside the converter honeycomb bricks convert large portions of dangerous exhaust particles into less dangerous chemical components and new chemical combinations. These rare metals are recycled and reused in new converters. Recycling these metals is far less expensive than mining and refining them. Aluminium recycling Aluminium recycling is the process by which scrap aluminium can be reused in products after its initial production. The process involves simply re-melting the metal, which is far less expensive and energy intensive than creating new aluminium through the electrolysis of aluminium oxide (Al2O3), which must first be mined from bauxite ore and then refined using the Bayer process. Recycling scrap aluminium requires only 5% of the energy used to make new aluminium. For this reason, approximately 31% of all aluminium produced in the United States comes from recycled scrap. In 1975, the United States' Clean Air Act required a 75% emissions reduction on all new model vehicles, which was to be achieved with the use of a catalytic converter. In the US, these improvements are in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) more stringent amendments to the Clean Air Act. Like the human heart, the AC compressor pumps fluid so that it would flow in a closed loop through the various parts of the system. Instead of blood, however, the AC compressor pumps refrigerant, which is the main element responsible for absorbing all the heat that accumulates inside the vehicle s cabin.
